Research Chair in the social impact of cannabis/marijuana use at St. Thomas University

St. Thomas University invites applications for its newly established Health Research Chair in the Social Impact of Cannabis/Marijuana Use. This tenure-track/tenured appointment (at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) will begin no later than July 1st 2018.

St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution with a full-time enrolment of 1,900 students. Its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Social Work degrees.

This tenure-track/tenured position will be housed in either the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice or the Department of Sociology. The first five years of this position will be funded through the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation’s (NBHRF) Research Chair program. During this period, the successful candidate will benefit from a substantially reduced teaching load and have access to a generous fund to support their program of research.

The successful candidate for the Research Chair will have: a Ph.D. in Criminology, Sociology, or a related discipline, with research interests related to the social impact of cannabis use; a strong research track-record; and a strong record of, and commitment to, undergraduate teaching.

The Department of History and the Department of Political Science at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, seek applications for a tenure-track cross-appointment in Law and Society with a focus on the Global South.  We welcome applications from scholars with research in law and society in colonial, postcolonial, international, transnational, or comparative contexts.  Research specialties may include, but are not limited to: transitional justice, empire and the law, peace and conflict studies, legal pluralism, and law in everyday social life and informal contexts.  Applicants must have a Ph.D., or be near completion of a doctoral degree, in History, Political Science, or a relevant discipline.  The successful candidate will be housed in one of the two departments and will contribute to the interdisciplinary Minor in Law and Society.

Call for Applications: Post-Doc at UNB

The Faculty of Arts at the University of New Brunswick is accepting applications for twelve-month post-doctoral fellowship beginning 1 July 2017.  This postdoc is in conjunction with a SSHRC-funded Partnership Development Grant on “Unrest, Violence and the Search for Social Order in British North America and Canada, 1749-1878” and the Canada Research Chair in Atlantic Canada Studies. 

The fellow’s primary responsibilities will be two-fold:  1) work on a research project that is relevant to the theme of unrest, violence, and social order in British North America, and 2) work with the co-partners on the grant – Elizabeth Mancke (UNB), Jerry Bannister (Dalhousie University), Scott See (University of Maine), and Denis McKim (Douglas College) to edit a volume of essays coming out of a workshop on this theme.

At UNB, the fellow will be affiliated with Elizabeth Mancke, CRC in Atlantic Canada Studies, the Atlantic Canada Studies Centre, and the Department of History.  The compensation is $40,500. Potential candidates must be within three years of receiving their PhD and must have their PhD completed by 1 June 2017.

The preferred applicant will be a legal specialist with an emerging research agenda in Canadian criminal law, criminal procedure and/or the legal system. The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in a field related to legal studies in addition to legal training at the LLB/JD level at minimum. The Peter A. Allard School of Law is offering a one-year scholarship of $15,000 to support an LLM student during the 2017-18 academic year to write a thesis on some aspect of British Columbia’s legal history, with preference for a student working on the history of legal education or the legal profession and who intends to use the materials available through the Allard School of Law History Project.

Through the generous donation of Peter A. Allard, Q.C., the Law School established the Allard School of Law History Project to collect, preserve, and communicate its rich history and the history of legal education and the legal profession in British Columbia. Using an online archive to allow broad access, the Project aims to capture something of the experiences of people who passed through the school as students, faculty, or staff, and of those who have made significant contributions to the development of the law in British Columbia.
 
This involves collecting documentary material and an ambitious oral history project. More than 40 interviews are already lodged in the UBC Archives and available on the Allard School of Law History Project website: http://historyproject.allard.ubc.ca/. Work continues to build the documentary and oral histories collection.

The Allard School of Law History Project LLM Scholarship is to support a student working on some aspect of British Columbia’s legal history, preferably using the material collected through the Project in his or her LLM thesis, and, by doing so, contributing to the history of the legal profession and/or to the legal history of British Columbia.

The Simone de Beauvoir Institute at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec invites applications for a position in Feminism and Law and Society. This internationally known institute offers four undergraduate programs in the field of Women's Studies (Major, Minor, Certificate, and Specialization).
